Moomin saucer Opera Moomintroll is a special edition saucer launched by Moomin Arabia to celebrate the 25th anniversary of a Japanese online store Scope specialized in kitchenware and ceramics. The Opera collection consists of a mug, a Moomintroll plate and a Little My plate. The collection is available only from Scope online store in Japan where they ship only within Japan. Only one batch of each item has been made. Once that batch has been sold out there will be no additional products coming.
The illustration on the Opera collection products is based on the first ever Moomin opera aired at the National Opera of Finland in 1974. The Moomin opera started from the initiative of composer Ilkka Kuusisto. He contacted Tove Jansson who was excited to write a libretto for the upcoming opera. The story line of the opera was otherwise consistent with an earlier play, but Jansson changed the setting from a theater to an opera.
In the Moomin opera, an underwater volcano causes a flood in the Moominvalley, forcing the Moomin family to flee and eventually find shelter at the opera. Here the family starts pursuing the art of the opera. Surprising everyone, it turned out that Fillyjonks’ housemaid Misabel is a real opera star.
Tove Jansson illustrated the poster for the opera as well as the program which was shaped as Moominmamma’s purse. The Moomin opera aired for the first time in December 1974. The critics were not that convinced, but children loved seeing familiar characters live on stage. The opera was shown 34 times, and nearly 15000 people saw it.
