Moomins got their first international breakthrough in 1954 when then largest newspaper in the world, The Evening News, started to publish Moomin comic strips. Product suggestions and queries started to flow in for Tove Jansson. This led to the birth of the first ceramic Moomin figurines, Atelier Fauni Moomin dolls and the first ceramic Moomin dishes.
The first Moomin dishes came to market in the late 1950’s. The product line was designed for children and included two Moomin mugs, a Moomin plate and a deep Moomin plate. The dishes are made by Arabia and designed by Tove Jansson. These were the first and the last Moomin dishes that Tove Jansson herself has designed. The later Teema-shaped Moomin mugs are mostly designed by Tove Slotte. Some of the earlier 1990’s Moomin mugs were designed by Camilla Moberg.
The 1950’s Moomin mugs feature either Moomintroll or Snorkmaiden as the main character. On the other side of the mugs there features three different illustrations, depending on the variation. Two of them portray Little My and one features Whomper.
