Moomin plate Muskrat In a Cave is the very first Arabia Moomin plate that features the philosopher Muskrat. Moomin collectors all over the world have been waiting for a Muskrat collection for a very long time. Muskrat appears in only two novels by Tove Jansson: Comet in Moominland (1946) and Finn Family Moomintroll (1948). In more recent years the Muskrat has gained more visibility with the new animated Moomin TV series Moominvalley, first launched in 2019. The plate is also known as Moomin plate Muskrat beige.
The illustration on the Moomin plate Muskrat In a Cave is based on the Finn Family Moomintroll novel. The novel describes the Muskrat as an older gentleman with a moustache who likes spending time alone and ponder life’s big questions. Muskrat’s views of the world are not always that rosy as can be seen from the title of the book in his hand called “The Uselessness of Everything”. Muskrat is not easily bothered by anything. However, when he falls to the ground from his favourite spot, the hammock near Moominhouse, his dignity takes a hit. Already tired of the restlessness in Moominhouse, he retreats to a beach cave where he can stay in peace with his thoughts.
The Muskrat In a Cave dish is the last Arabia Classics Collection together with the Sniff On the Beach -collection illustrated by Tove Slotte, who retired in 2022.
The Muskrat In a Cave set includes a mug, a bowl and a plate.
