The Moomin’s Day 2018 Moomin mug was for sale on the 9th of August in 2018 only for a single day. 9th of August is Tove Jansson’s birthday. The sales started from online stores at midnight and caused unforeseen traffic. In addition to the online stores, the mugs were being sold at the Moomin Shop Forum in Helsinki at midnight. The first people to queue for the mugs appeared already nine hours prior to the beginning of the sales. The other Moomin shops started selling the mugs after they opened in the morning. The mug’s artwork has gotten its landscape view from the Associated Newspapers’ sales catalogue, that Tove Jansson made in 1955, while Moominmamma and Moomintroll were taken from Tove Jansson’s novel Moominland Midwinter.
The 2018 Moomin’s Day mug was the first special edition Moomin mug made to celebrate Moomin’s Day. Since 2018 there has been other Moomin’s Day mugs released as well, such as the 2021 Moomin’s Day mug and the Moomin’s Day mug from 2024.
