Moomin mug Moomin’s Day 2025 is one of the special edition mugs of the Moomin 80th anniversary. The previous, 2024 Moomin’s Day mug, was also known as Spring. Other Moomin’s Day mugs released so far are the summer-themed Moomin’s Day Moomin mug from 2018, the winter-themed Moomin’s Day mug from 2021 and the Moomin’s Day mug 0f 2023 called Sea Breeze. Moomin’s day celebrates the birth of Tove Jansson (9th of August), the creator of Moomin. This special edition Moomin mug is produced in limited quantity.
The main theme of the Moomin’s Day 2025 mug illustration revolves around the first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, from 80 years ago. In the story, Moominmamma and Moomintroll search for the long-lost Moominpappa. A massive flood has submerged everything, but fortunately, the help given by fellow travelers they encounter along the way finally reunites the Moomin family. The flood recedes, and in the beautiful valley that unfolds before them, they discover their very own home – the Moominhouse. In later Moomin stories, the Moominhouse becomes the foundation of the Moomin family’s way of life. Its doors are never locked, and all kinds of visitors are always welcome.
One of the most striking features of the mug’s illustration is the Moomins’ narrow snouts and generally less rounded features. This is how the Moomins were originally drawn in the first Moomin story 80 years ago, so the illustration remains faithfully true to the original story and artistic details. In the illustration, Moominmamma and Moomintroll are sheltered in the forest together with Sniff and the girl Tulippa, whom they met along their journey. Moominmamma has built a safe nest for the traveling group, where everyone sleeps curled up together. However, the strange sounds of the forest still keep Moomintroll awake. Despite the narrow snouts, the fundamental characteristics of each figure are already clearly visible – Moominmamma is the caring mother figure, Moomintroll is cautious yet brave, and Sniff is a friendly faintheart.
Another special feature of the mug’s design is a small illustration inside the mug depicting Moominmamma and Moomintroll climbing up a ladder. This detail is only visible if the mug is held in the left hand while drinking. The mug’s illustrator, Parvati Pillai, has mentioned that this element is a small greeting to all left-handed people.
